$500/hour
This compares to the rate of $740/hr. that Mr. Mathison's old law firm charged in 2023, which would have increased to over $800/hr. come Jan. 1, 2024 if he hadn't have left.
Mr. Mathison is steeped in patent law, specializing in patent prosecution and counseling.
On occasion he assesses those threatening letters "to license" technologies, which often come from lawyers who are not steeped in patent law.
Mr. Mathison's technical background is in the electrical, electromechanical, and software arts. For the past few years he has been drafting and prosecuting patents related to implantable ocular devices and brain machine interfaces, microwave/RF antennas, nonlinear gain media for lasers, zero-knowledge proof architectures, natural language chatbot systems, and, what sounds like fun, video games.
An educational background in electrical and aeronautical engineering turned out to be perfect for patent law because it covers so many things, at least things that are not chemical or pharmaceutical formulations.
With programming skills in a variety of computer languages, Mr. Mathison developed software on nights and weekends to help his legal teams with patent prosecution. That lead to his spearheading the modernization of Kilpatrick Townsend's internal software tools and its client extranet, the latter of which was lauded in national articles.
And yes, these patent tools for patents are patented. Mr. Mathison is an inventor on all but one of the patents owned by the 160-year old law IP-focused firm. "I am also a client," says Mr. Mathison, meaning that he himself experienced what it was like on the receiving end, being interviewed for his inventions, reviewing drafts, and signing things.
Utility Patent Nos. 11,392,627; 11,822,585; 11,226,996; 11,222,050; 11,829,393
Design Patent Nos. D928,800; D941,848; D960,181; D962,953; D987,667
Mr. Mathison set off for his own firm to bring partner-level experience directly to clients without the overhead of a large law firm. That, and building intuitive software that lowers the barrier to understanding patent families is where he devotes his time.
